SeaWorld of Ohio opened in 1970. This was the second park for SeaWorld, which started in San Diego six years earlier. Ohio was chosen for the second SeaWorld because it’s central location was within a days drive of half the US population (at that time) and Americans were increasingly willing to drive farther for vacations. The move to the was in part to capitalize on the theme park boom that had started in the 1960s after the success of Disneyland in Orange County, California. This would lead to the opening of a third SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida just a few years later as that area became a new hub for vacations (with the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971).
