Geauga Lake’s Big Dipper Roller Coaster to Come Down

News outlets are reporting that the famed Big Dipper roller coaster at Geauga Lake park is coming down. Geauga Lake closed in 2007 and most of the park has been taken down to the ground. The Big Dipper was left until now. Unfortunately, Cedar Fair is concerned about the liability from trespassers going over the fence to photograph the old ride.

According to Cleveland.com:

“Before it closed, the Big Dipper – 65 feet high, 2,680 feet long, with a top speed of 32 mph — was one of the oldest operating roller coasters in the United States. It was designed by John A. Miller, a Chicago native who was known as the father of the modern coaster.”

Above is a Bing Maps view of the old coaster. You can see why it’s such a symbol of Geauga Lake. It’s close to the entrance, close to the lake, and easily seen from the road. If you read this blog, then you know I’m not really into showing ruin-I’d rather be positive. However, I wanted to capture this before it was lost.
